(LANSING, MI) – The Lansing Lugnuts have extended the netting at Cooley Law School Stadium, increasing cover and better serving fan comfort and peace of mind, the team announced Monday.

“Fan safety is of utmost importance to us, and extending our netting was a necessary move,” said Lugnuts General Manager Tyler Parsons. “This is a move that most, if not all, professional baseball teams are doing, and that illustrates its importance in our profession.”

Along with extending the netting the Lugnuts, the Class A affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays, replaced the existing netting with a better product, limiting obstructed views. It makes Cooley Law School Stadium a safe environment for fans.

The push for extended netting across the national pastime began with Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred issuing a list of recommendations for MLB teams.

“Major League Baseball prides itself on providing fans in our ballparks with unparalleled proximity and access to our players and the game taking place on the field,” Manfred wrote. “At the same time, it is important that fans have the option to sit behind protective netting or in other areas of the ballpark where foul balls and bats are less likely to enter.”

Minor League Baseball President and CEO Pat O’Connor released his own statement on the matter.

“Minor League Baseball clubs strive to offer a safe, family-friendly facilities for our fans and these recommendations will help ensure the safety of those fans sitting close to the action,” he said.

The Lugnuts return home June 15 to 17 and welcome the South Bend Cubs to Lansing for a three-game series to end the first half of the season. The homestand includes back-to-back LAFCU Fireworks Spectaculars following Family Faith Night on Friday, June 15, and Star Wars Night on Saturday, June 16.

Then celebrate Father’s Day with the Lugnuts on Sunday, June 17, with a special Jersey Giveaway to the first 1,000 fans.

Cooley Law School Stadium will host the best prospects in baseball at the 54th annual Midwest League All-Star Game on June 19.
