(TECUMSEH, ON) – The St Clair Green Giants kicked off the start of the 2018 Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League on the road with a 3-game series at the Saginaw Sugar Beets (3-4), beginning at the home of the Great Lakes Loons, Dow Diamond in Midland, MI. The Giants almost doubled up the Beets, 13-7, as St Clair enjoyed multiple run production in 3 innings.
For game 2, a 10-8 win for Saginaw, the scene switched to Theunissen Stadium at Central Michigan University in Mt Pleasant. Trailing by 6 entering the 8th inning, the Green Giants put 4 runs across the plate, but couldn’t coerce any more scoring and leaving 2 men on the base paths in each of the 8th and 9th innings.
The rubber match moved to Cardinal Field in Saginaw where St Clair pounded out 17 hits and 12 runs and giving up just a single run to the Sugar Beets. Saginaw didn’t help their cause as they committed 2 errors in the 9-inning game. The Giants left 10 men on base.
St Clair celebrated their home opener with a 4-0 shutout of the Lake Erie Monarchs (1-1) at Lacasse Park. Tucson, Arizona’s Gage O’Brien lasted 6.2 innings, allowing no runs on 2 hits and 2 walks while striking out 8. The 4 runs came on just 2 hits as the Giants employed small ball for their offense, including two sacrifice flies, a stolen base, and an unearned run.
Lake Erie exacted some revenge in the second of the 2-game set, winning 14-9 despite giving up 3 St Clair runs in the bottom of the 9th. Taylor Pappin was tagged with the loss in his first start of the season, lasting just 2 innings and giving up 6 runs. Rodrigo Duluc stroked 3 hits and batted in 2 runs. Brady Dorn also sent 2 runners home on a 4th inning single.
Outfielder Gianni Tomasi is batting .500 in 12 at bats in 5 games, including 3 doubles. On the base path, Carter Mossey has 3 stolen bases on three attempts while Duluc has 2 in 2.
RHP Chris Lata, of Victoria, BC, has logged 3 innings of work over 4 games in relief. He enjoys a 0.00 ERA with 3 strikeouts and giving up 1 hit, and 1 base on balls. In his start against the Sugar Beets, RHP Marcus Christy gave up zero runs over 6 innings, but walked 2 and struck out 1.
St Clair (3-2) embark on a 2-game road trip to Hamilton, OH, to face the Joes (2-0) at Foundation Field. They’ll return home this Thursday for a pair of games against the Muskegon Clippers (2-1). The first pitch is at 7:05pm each night.
