Saints Drop Two At Humber

(ETOBICOKE, ON) – After clawing their way back from a 21-point deficit the St. Clair College Women’s Basketball team fell short and could only come within an 89-83 loss to Humber College in Etobicoke Saturday evening.  The Lady Saints now hold a 5-3 record in the OCAA’s West Division.

The opening quarter proved to be St. Clair’s undoing in this contest and allowed the home team to shoot 81% from the field which led to a 34-19 disadvantage.  In fact the Saints trailed by 21 points in the second quarter before fighting back to within 56-39 by halftime.

St. Clair continued to chip away outplaying Humber the remainder of the game but could come no closer than 6 points down the stretch.  Outshot and out-rebounded all game St. Clair managed to score 22 points off 23 Humber turnovers and were +10 in second chance points.  However, St. Clair was outscored 34-5 in points off the bench.

Second-year guard Jana Kucera (Chatham, ON) scored a game high 28 points to go with 9 rebounds and added 5 assists for the Saints.  Noor Bazzi (Windsor, ON/Vincent Massey) had her best shooting game of the season making four triples on her way to 24 points and cleared 8 rebounds.  Point guard Anna Ulicny (Tecumseh, ON/St. Anne) also chipped in with 20 points for St. Clair while helping her teammates with 5 assists.

The St. Clair Women’s Basketball team will finish the first half of their regular season schedule with a trip to the University of Toronto (Mississauga) on Sunday.  Tip time is 1:00pm.

Men’s Team Falls 100-71

The men’s team suffered their worst loss of the season Saturday night in Etobicoke losing 100-71 to Humber College which drops their OCAA West Division record to 3-5.

Some early foul trouble put St. Clair out of sorts but they stayed within striking distance and only trailed 28-22 after the first quarter.  A horrid second quarter saw the Saints only score 7 points and were down 52-29 by the halftime intermission.

The deficit swelled to 35 points in the third quarter before St. Clair turned it around and actually outscored Humber 23-19 in the frame.  The damage was done however and the teams allowed the reserves some playing time in the final minutes of the fourth quarter.  Humber had 56 bench points in the game to St. Clair’s 32 but a 20% separation in shooting from the floor was the Saints downfall.

David Gomez Jr. (Pontiac, MI) scored 23 points for the Saints in the loss with Juwan Lynch (Windsor, ON/Kennedy Collegiate) coming off the bench to score 15 points while adding 8 rebounds.  Jalen Sykes (Redford, MI) only managed 10 points to go with 6 rebounds before exiting the game after reaching the personal foul limit.

The St. Clair Men’s Basketball team will finish the first half of their regular season schedule with a trip to the University of Toronto (Mississauga) on Sunday.  Tip time is 3:00pm.
