LaSalle Golfer Moves Into 2nd Place

(WOOLWICH, ON) – Stephanie Markovich of Welland holds a tight two-stroke lead heading into the final round of the Investors Group Ontario Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship hosted by Elmira Golf Club.

With the greens drying out after a deluge of rain on Wednesday, the course presented a tougher challenge for competitors on Thursday.  Markovich turned in an eight-over par 78 in her second round, adding to her opening 70 (E) for a total score of 148 (+8). The Lookout Point Country Club member’s opening score was a stroke off the women’s course record (69) held by fourteen-time Ontario Women’s Mid-Amateur champion Mary Ann Hayward, but there were less birdies to be found in round two.

Markovich carded three birdies against five bogeys and three doubles as she made her way around the course, enough to still hold an edge over the field with 18 holes left to play.

Moving up the leaderboard into second place is LaSalle resident Audrey Akins. The GAO Public Player laid down two birdies and five bogeys on Thursday to deliver a three-over 73 for a total score of 150 (77-73), ten-over par. Akins will look to close the gap in today’s final round as she tees it up in the final grouping alongside Markovich.

Third place currently belongs to former Ontario Women’s Match Play champion Judith Kyrinis of Thornhill, who carded a 76 Thursday to sit with a two-day tally of 153 (77-76), +13. Four golfers are tied for fourth place at 155 (+15), Andrea Blackwell of Kingston, Margot Gillespie of Coatsworth, and Ancaster resident Jennifer Lochhead, while Etobicoke’s Marion Reid sits alone in seventh place at 160 (+20).

The final round of the tournament got underway at 7:30 am today, with the lead group of Markovich, Akins and Kyrinis teeing off at 9:40 am. The trophy will be presented at approximately 2:00 pm and spectators are welcomed at Elmira Golf Club.
