(WINDSOR, ON) – The Windsor Lancers women’s soccer program kicked off the 2013 season with a tentative win against the visiting York Lions at Alumni Field. A late strike from a goal-mouth scramble lifted the Lancers to a 1-0 victory on Saturday.

Becca Fuerth, a 5’ 7” freshman from Woodslee, sent the ball to the back of the York net after a Windsor free kick in the 75th minute. Until that point in the game, the Lions held the territorial advantage over Windsor but couldn’t sustain any pressure in the Lancer defensive zone.

York led in shots at the end of the first half by a 7 to 2 margin, and continued to press the Windsor defenders for the final 15 minutes. But backs Meg Roberts and Courtney Fleming held strong for keeper Tara Benard-Rae, who earned the shutout.

On Sunday the Lancers weren’t so lucky as they were drubbed by Western 6-nil to split the first weekend of the season.

The women next meet Laurier and UOIT this Saturday and Sunday respectively, at Alumni Field.
