(WINDSOR, ON) – The South Windsor Arena was the site of an exhibition hockey game as the Windsor Lancers men hosted the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks. If the 4-3 shoot-out win for the home club is any indication, fans are in store for an exciting 2013-14 season.
A blow-out appeared to be in store as the Lancers quickly took a 2-0 lead before the half-way point of the first period with two goals from 6’ forward Jadran Beljo. The Sudbury native is the property of the London Knights of the OHL and is in his last year of eligibility in the OUA. However, Laurier’s rookie Greg Lamoureaux of Calgary cut the lead in half at 10:56 of the first period.
There was no scoring in the second period, but there was a lot of sparks as the two clubs battled each other for the second time in seven days. The teams traded roughing penalties at 10:12 with first-year defenseman Julian Luciani picking up two minutes for unsportsman like conduct. The Lancers ran into penalty trouble throughout the game, often finding themselves killing off a disadvantage.
Despite an early goal in the third for Windsor, the home club was outscored 2-1 in the final frame, including the game tying goal when Lancer goalie Parker Van Buskirk was slow to cover the weak side on a wrap-around by Tanner Olstad. The teams were still tied after five minutes of OT and headed into a shoot-out.
Laurier missed their first two attempts on goal while Windsor netted theirs. That was enough to preserve the win for the Lancers after letting Laurier back into the game.
The Lancers next faces the Carleton Ravens on the 11th and 12th of October at South Windsor. Game time both nights is 7:30 pm.
