WECSSAA Players Of The Week

By John DeNapoli

(WINDSOR, ON) – In the season finale, a 35-3 victory over the Villanova Wildcats, the Cougars’ offensive line (Jacob Benson, Adam Slikboer, Joe Slikboer, Nick Peters, and Brandon Martins) was able to create some huge holes for the running backs and gave QB Andrew Valle loads of time to throw to WR Matteo Del Brocco.

Head Coach Chris Church described the dominant offensive linemen.

“It really doesn’t matter who was running the ball, we were successful,” he said. “There are no weaknesses in this unit, as they continually provide our QB with enough time to complete deep passes.”

This week the Cougars (6-1) will host a Quarter-Final match-up against the same Villanova (4-3) team on Thursday at 2:30 pm.

St Anne’s middle line-backer Matt McKeen had a great night stuffing the potent Kennedy (4-3) offense in an 8-6 upset win over the Clippers. The undisputed leader of the Saints, McKeen led the defence with 11 solo tackles, two fumble recoveries, and a tackle for loss resulting in a safety.

Saints’ Head Coach Scott Mallender said his MLB is a dedicated player.

“Matt is the leader of our team on and off the field,” Mallender said. “Matt never misses practice, leads all the drills, and many times has been my assistant coach when I was the sole coach at times. Matt is extremely versatile and could actually play running back.”

The Saints (2-5) will travel to St. Joseph’s (2-5) on Friday at 2:30 pm to play a Wilson Conference Quarter-Final against the Lasers.

Austyn Perisic and Benji Dagousse led the St Joseph’s Lasers to their second victory, a dramatic 22-21 win over the Brennan Cardinals. Trailing 21-7 with 1:06 to play in the 4th quarter, Perisic hit Dagousse for a touchdown, then Dagousse was able to recover the ensuing onside kick.

On the final play of the game, Perisic’s ‘Hail Mary’ pass fell into the arms of WR Eric Schneider and then on the 2-pt convert Perisic was able to run the ball in for a 22-21 come-from-behind win.

On the day, Dagousse had two TD receptions, while Perisic threw three TD passes plus scored the winning 2-pt convert.

Lasers’ Head Coach David Fuerth highlighted the heroics of Perisic.

“What can I say about Austyn? He’s a big play QB that was able to make plays in the clutch,” Fuerth said. “He continues to lead our team, and I expect much of the same this week in our playoff game against St. Anne’s.”

The Lasers (2-5) will host the St. Anne’s Saints (2-5) on Friday at 2:30 pm in a Wilson Conference Quarter-Final.
