By Jessica Barrett

(HAMILTON, ON) – Ontario University Athletics is pleased to announce the major award winners for the 2013-14 track and field season.

The winner of the Hec Phillips Trophy as the OUA’s outstanding male performer goes to Alex Ullman of the Windsor Lancers. Ullman claimed individual gold two times as he topped the podium in the 600m and 1000m. The Kitchener native added a third gold medal as he anchored the Lancers to a first place finish in the 4x400m, setting an OUA championships record (3:17.24). Ullman also earned silver in the 4X800m relay and helped the Lancer men to the OUA banner.

Katelyn Ayers of the Guelph Gryphons received the Dr Wendy Jerome Trophy as the outstanding female performer of the OUA championships. In her first year of competition, the Orillia, Ont., native claimed two gold medals and two silvers. Ayers stood atop the podium in the 600m and 800m races, and finished second as the anchor for both the 4x400m and 4×800 relays. She accumulated 24 total points, pushing the Gryphon women to their second straight championship. For her remarkable performance she was also named the OUA female rookie of the year.

By earning the Hec Phillips and Dr Wendy Jerome trophies, Ullman and Ayers become the OUA nominees for Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) track athletes of the year.

The Bob Vigars award for men’s coach of the year goes to Windsor’s Dennis Fairall. The veteran coach guided the Lancers to the 2013-14 OUA men’s banner after falling just short a year ago. This marks the eighth time Fairall has been named the men’s coach of the year.
