Hayward Extends Lead

By Darren Matte

(WINDSOR, ON) – After the second round of the Investors Group Ontario Senior Women’s Championship, July 30 at Ambassador Golf Club in Windsor, defending champion Mary Ann Hayward has extended her lead to five strokes. The three-time champion will now look to hold off the field during tomorrow’s final round.

Hayward, a North Halton member and Aurora resident, entered the day with a one-shot lead at two-under. After the front nine, the Canadian, Ontario and Quebec Golf Hall of Famer remained at two-under. However back-to-back bogeys on the 12th and 13th holes had her at even for the tournament. Hayward would find a birdie on 16 and finished the day at one-over (73) bringing her tournament total to one-under.

Following Hayward are her two playing partners: Thornhill’s Judith Kyrinis and Etobicoke’s Terrill Samuel. Kyrinis followed up her opening round 75 with a one-over (73) during the second round to sit at four-over for the tournament. As for Samuel, the 2011 champion, she trailed by just one stroke after the opening round. She looked to maintain her position after an even front nine. However, she ran into trouble on the back nine and finished five-over (77) for the round, bringing her tournament total to four-over.

Just two shots back of Kyrinis and Terrill are two more players.  Etobicoke’s Marion Reid and Uxbridge’s Gail Pimm both finished the day at five-over (77) and sit at six-over after two days. They will find themselves in the second to last group with 2008 and 2009 champion Ivy Steinberg, of Stouffville, who also finished five-over (77) during the round. She sits at seven-over for the tournament.

In the district team competition, the team from York won the gross with a two-day total of 23-over (452). In the net, it was London who took home the title.

After the round, the field was cut to the low 54 scores and ties. The cut was set at a two-day total of 35-over (179) and 57 players made the final round.

Tee times for the final round get underway at 7:30 am with the final group teeing off at 10:30 am. Spectators are welcomed to check out the action at the Ambassador Golf Club. For more information on pairings and the leaderboard see the tournament site.
