Brecka Steps Down From Volleyball Post

By Jay Shewfelt

(WINDSOR, ON) – The St Clair College Athletic Department has announced women’s volleyball head coach Chris Brecka has decided to step down from her duties and retire from coaching. Brecka would like to spend more time with her family and also focus on her business that has been growing significantly over the last couple of years.

“We are very appreciative of Chris’s efforts with the women’s volleyball program at St Clair and her many years of dedicated service to the College and its student athletes,” stated Christy Gatto, Director of Athletics and Sport Development. “She has been instrumental in developing many great women on and off the court and we wish her all the best in her future endeavours.”

Brecka spent a total of 10 seasons with the Saints women’s volleyball program. Her best finish was in 2008-09 when St Clair placed 4th in the West Region, with a record of 15-5, and qualified for the OCAA quarter-finals.

This past season the Saints finished with a record of 12-6 and fourth place in the West, hosting a playoff game against Durham, but losing a tight match 3-2.

Brecka was 82-97 in league play over her 10 seasons. The women’s team made the playoffs three times during Brecka’s tenure and was 0-3 in their playoff matches.

St Clair also managed to be ranked in the top 10 teams in the OCAA several times during Brecka’s stay.

Brecka’s teams were always one of the top academic teams during her 10 years. They’ve won the Don Hogan Award, for top grade point average, three times, and she was also instrumental in producing many OCAA All-Stars and All Academic Award winners.

Chris’s teams also had many successful tournament appearances during her time including placing second at the Durham College Adidas Cup the past two seasons.

“I have always been proud to be a Saint and am grateful for the opportunities that St Clair has provided,” Brecka said. “I will cherish the relationships that I have developed over the years. I have had the privilege of working with some really remarkable young women.”

The St Clair Athletic Department begins its search right away to fill the vacancy and interested applicants can contact the Athletics Department by phone at  (519) 972-2727 Ext. 4217 for more information. Resumes may also be emailed.
