(WINDSOR, ON) – The storm clouds threatened, but they couldn’t dissuade the Windsor Stars and Vaughan Azzurri from taking the pitch at McHugh Stadium. After two halves and 3 minutes of extra time, the teams played to a 2-1 Azzurri win.
The visitors struck early in the match when Deon Harris struck at the 15 minute mark. The Vaughan forward hit the back of the net with a strike when he was left unmarked inside the 18. Dena Lezady put Vaughan ahead by two when he found the net four minutes later.
Windsor came close to getting on the scoreboard when Michael Pio’s header was cleared from the goal line in the 25th minute. Minutes later, Gino Berardi shifted the defense before sending his shot wide of the goal.
Windsor defender Carlos Soares was assessed a yellow card after getting tangled with an Azzurri player.
Berardi was awarded a penalty kick after Vaughan handled a ball inside the goal area. His shot escaped the outstretched dive by keeper Dayne St Clair.
“We got a couple unlucky bounces in the first half,” said Stars head coach Shane Topalovic. “But I thought our guys played hard and picked it up after the penalty shot. I just don’t think we’re getting the bounces we need.”
The second half began with a Goran Stjepanovic yellow card, the second for Windsor. Play was uneventful to the final whistle without any bounces going either team’s way. At the end of 90 minutes, and a third yellow card in extra time, Windsor had its second loss of the season in as many games.
Windsor now travels to Esther Shiner Stadium in North York to take on the Sanjaxx Lions on Mother’s Day. The Stars will be in Mississauga on the 16th before returning home on May 31 to host the Kingston Clippers at 4:00 pm.
