(WINDSOR, ON) – The Windsor Stars travelled to North York on Sunday and picked up their first points of the young season in a 2-1 win over the Sanjaxx Lions. The win improves Windsor’s record to 1-2 and raises them to the middle of the table.
Captain Stephen Ademolu opened the scoring for the Stars in the 15th minute as he headed in a rebound from a Michael Pio shot on goal. Ademolu’s first goal of the season was timely as it was the first time Windsor has led in a game this season.
The confidence boost was short-lived when, 10 minutes later, Sanjaxx connected on a 20-yard kick that caught Windsor keeper Kyle Vizirakis by surprise.
Windsor came close on a couple more chances, but the teams went to the dressing room tied at 1.
The Stars took the play into the Sanjaxx zone and peppered shots toward the goal. An attempt by Pio sailed high while Stefan Milidrag’s kick went wide. Ademolu had a chance from close in on a breakaway, but Lions keeper Matt Zaikos was quick to the ball to shut him down.
Minutes later Milidrag booted a shot with his left foot and Brendan Woodfull forced a save by Zaikos.
Vizirakis was on his game when he turned away a Sanjaxx break to keep the score knotted in the 79th minute. Windsor turned the ball back up field and continued to pressure the Lions defence.
Gino Berardi found himself with the ball and turned and shot from 10-yards out. He found the back of the net for second goal in two games, and put Windsor in the lead once again.
Four minutes of extra time was added, but it wasn’t enough for Sanjaxx as Windsor took three points away with a split on the weekend.
The Stars will travel to take on Sigma FC under the lights in Mississauga on May 16. Their next home match will be played May 31 at McHugh Stadium at 4:00 pm.
