(VAUGHAN, ON) – Under the glaring sun, the Windsor Stars battled Vaughan Azzurri to a 1-1 draw yesterday afternoon at the McNaughton Turf in Maple. Windsor was looking to avenge the loss to Azzurri.

A lone attempt by Azzurri in the fourth minute highlighted a scoreless 1st half as the heat slowed play down between the two sides. A 21st minute yellow card to Vaughan was matched with a warning assessed to Windsor’s Jamar Kelly 10 minutes into the 2nd half.

Mario Kovacevic broke the deadlock with a strike 23 minutes from time, but the celebration was short-lived as Mike Pio knotted the score once again, just four minutes later. A late yellow to Windsor keeper Kyle Vizirakis didn’t change the outcome.

The Stars did well to pick up a point from League 1 Ontario’s 2nd place club. Azzurri sits 9 points ahead of Windsor on the ladder, with one more game played. Windsor was also playing with a short bench after a minor collision en route to Maple forced some players to return home.

Windsor will continue their road trip in Kingston on August 3. The Clippers trail Windsor by 7 points and will be looking to avenge the 3-2 loss to the Stars in Amherstburg on May 31.

The next home match for the Stars will be August 7 at McHugh Soccer Complex when Sigma FC come to town. The kick-off is scheduled for 8:00 pm.
