(LaSALLE, ON) – The LaSalle Vipers have named their captains for the 2015-16 season, head coach and general manager Bill Bowler has announced.
Nathan Veres, 20, was named team captain while Nathan Savage, a LaSalle native, was selected as an alternate. The two have played their entire junior hockey careers in LaSalle, totalling nearly 400 games between them.
“LaSalle has been so good to me and I’ve been so lucky to be a part of this team since a young age,” said Veres. “Seeing the young guys now, there are so many things they’re going through that I remember and I’m hoping I can help them through that.”
As leaders, they are expected to set the tone for their teammates both on and off the ice.
Veres, a hard-hitting defenseman, has won the team’s Hardest Working Player award each of the past two seasons.
“All you can do at the end of the day is work as hard as you can,” Veres said. “I always say, you should always try to work harder than you did the time before and that’s how you become the best you can be.”
Savage is a cerebral player who knows where to go in the attacking zone to generate offence, and has been a reliable penalty killer for Bowler over the past two seasons.
“I just try to go out there and work hard, and at the end of every game be able to say you left it all on the ice,” said Savage. “Our message is ‘no one works harder than our team.’”
The Vipers home opener is Wednesday, September 16 at the Vollmer Centre, against the London Nationals. The team will hold their annual tailgate party, which is completely free and open to the public, prior to the game, beginning at 5:00 pm.
Crystal Gage headlines the festivities, which also includes a BBQ, a performance by the Border City Barkers dog show, bouncy castles, and more.
