(WINDSOR, ON) – The Windsor Lancers announced their annual athletic awards to a packed room last night at the St Clair Centre of the Arts. The evening also saw tributes to two long-time Lancer employees, for their combined 69 years of service, upon their retirements.

Marking major contributions to Lancer Athletics, Richard Mallat and Kathy Harvie were honoured with a special recognition. Mallat is retiring after completing 43 years (a long time) with the Lancers as the lead equipment technician, while Harvie is retiring after 26 years as a Lancers athletic therapist.

Taking top honours for male athlete of the year was track and field star Corey Bellemore, as he was presented with the Olympic Shield. Bellemore, of Windsor, helped the cross-country team to a silver medal at the OUA Championships as well as at the CIS finals. He was then an integral performer at the OUA Track Championships, winning four medals and being named as the OUA MVP, as the men’s team captured the title.

Two weeks later in Toronto, Bellemore won two gold and a bronze as the men won the CIS National Championship.

Taking home the hardware as female athlete of the year was track and cross-country stand-out Stefanie Smith. Highlights from her 2015-16 season was earning a bronze at the OUA Championships as well as the CIS finals, named as CIS All-Canadian in cross-country, and competed for Canada in the FISU in Italy.

Indoors, Smith broke three Lancer records in the 3000m, the mile, and the 1500m events, over a short three-week period, solidifying her selection for the Banner Shield.

Taking home the DeMarco Award for outstanding academic achievements combined with athletic skill were Shannon Dean, from women’s volleyball, and Akbal Gill, of men’s soccer.

The Gino Fracas Award for Coach of the Year was accepted by Brett Lumley of the OUA and CIS champion men’s track and field team.

The Captain’s Trophy, for making a significant contribution both on and off the field, was awarded to Mike Rocca, from men’s basketball, and Laura Lecce, of women’s soccer.

Kaylee Anagnostopoulos, from women’s basketball, and Isiah Osborne, of the men’s basketball team, were named the Lancers Rookies of the Year, while 2nd year awards went to Carly Steer, again women’s basketball, and Chris Al-Youseff, of men’s soccer.
