(DETROIT, MI) – The Detroit RFC women built up a 31-14 halftime lead over the Minnesota Valkyries and hung on to win their second match of the season, 45-28 at Farwell Field in Detroit, on Saturday.

Detroit got tries from Christine Lisee, Lindsey Mancini, Renee O’Neill, Kristine Smith (2), and Heather Schmitt (2), and five conversions from Shaena Sparrow. Minnesota scorers included Kristin Zdanczewicz (2), Brittany White, and conversions from Bailey Johnson.

The home side racked up a 24-0 lead by the 29th minute before the Valkyries managed a team try to get on the board. The visitors were then able to cut the Detroit lead almost in half by the break.

Schmitt scored her second of the match to open the 2nd half, then White and Zdanczewicz teamed up to close the gap to just 10 points, in the 61st minute.

Smith then ran across in the 71st minute to close out the scoring and propel Detroit to the margin of victory.

The win gave Detroit a small amount of joy in avenging their earlier match against Minnesota, a one-point loss, 37-36, to open the season on September 12.

With one match remaining in the regular season, Detroit (2-3)  will face Chicago Rugby (0-5) this Saturday on the road. Detroit romped to a 103-24 win in their previous meeting.

Minnesota (3-2) will host the league leading Chicago North Shore (5-0) in their final match on May 7.
