(GRAND BEND, ON) – Belle River’s Larry O’Brien will aim to reclaim his crown as the world of drag racing descends upon Grand Bend this weekend for the IHRA’s 2016 Mopar Nationals.
Last season, the quarter mile strip at the Grand Bend Motorplex saw saw JR Carr, of Pasco, WA, and O’Brien go head to head during the Sunday finals. O’Brien nosed out Carr at 232.97mph, winning in a time of 6.543 seconds.
Racing in the Pro Stock class, O’Brien currently sits 5th on the leader board with 173 points, and trails 3rd place Carr by 28 points. The aptly named Cary Goforth leads the Pro Stock pack followed by Trevor Eman.
Goforth took the standings lead after winning last week at Maryland International Raceway.
The three-day Mopar Nationals will additionally feature the Nitro Funny Car, Nitro Motorcycle, and Pro Modified classes zipping down the strip, as well as the Top Fuel Dragsters. Interspersed will be competitors from the Nostalgia Hemi Super Stocks, Outlaw Sleds and sportsman racers from the amateur ranks.
Canadian Tim Boychuk will be looking to move up in the Nitro Funny Car standings where he currently occupies the 4th position.
Lastly, the action-packed weekend will include the flames of a special presentation of a jet truck.
