Two-Way Tie After Opening Round Of Ontario Women’s Amateur Championship

By Darren Matte

(LaSALLE, ON) – The 2016 Investors Group Ontario Women’s Amateur Championship kicked off on July 12, from the Ambassador Golf Club in LaSalle. High temperatures and low scores were the story of the first round as multiple players all finished the round under par.

Leading the way were Guelph’s Rachel Pollock and Richmond Hill’s Monet Chun who each carded a four-under 68 during the opening round.

Pollock, 21, from the Whistle Bear Golf Club, started the day well with a birdie on the opening hole and added two more on the front nine to sit at three-under at the turn. A bogey on 10 dropped her back one, but she made back-to-back birdies on the 12th and 13th to end the round at four-under.

As for Chun, 15, from The Summit Golf and Country Club, she also got out to a strong start on the front nine, highlighted by an eagle on the sixth hole. The Team Ontario member added three birdies and a bogey and was four-under as she made the turn. Chun moved to five-under after a birdie on the 10th, but bogeyed the 16th to finish the round at four-under.

Sitting one-shot back is Ottawa’s Grace St-Germain, who finished the round at a three-under 69. St-Germain, a member of Golf Canada’s National Development Squad, was three-under at the turn thanks, in part, to an eagle of her own on the sixth. She played the back nine even to finish her round at three-under.

Rounding out the top five is a five-way tie for fourth at one-under 71. Included in that group are Richmond Hill’ s Jessica Ip, Hornby’s Alexandra Naumovski, Thornhill’s Judith Kyrinis, St Thomas’ Mary Ann Hayward, and Brampton’s Karyn Lee Ping.

In total 64 players began the four-day, 72-hole tournament.

After round two on Wednesday, the field will be cut to the lowest 54 scores, including ties. In addition to playing for the Marlene Stewart Streit Trophy, the top three finishers will earn the right to represent Ontario in the team competition at the Canadian Women’s Amateur Championship, from July 26 through 29 at the Ken-Wo Golf Club in New Minas, NS.

The second round begins tomorrow at 7:30am and spectators are invited to Ambassador Golf Club to take in the action. For full tournament information, including the leaderboard and pairings, see the tournament site.
