(LaSALLE, ON) – Things got very interesting during the third round of the Investors Group Ontario Women’s Amateur Championship on July 14 from Ambassador Golf Club in Windsor. Heading into the day, it looked as if Ottawa’s Grace St-Germain was poised to run away with the title, however, the field had other ideas.
During the round, at least four players all held a share of the lead and after play eight players are all within five strokes.
When the dust had settled, it was Ridgeway’s Madeline Marck-Sherk and Guelph’s Rachel Pollock who found themselves tied atop the leaderboard at two-under for the tournament.
The round of the day belonged to Marck-Sherk, from the Bridgewater Country Club, who came into the round in a tie for sixth at one-over. Marck-Sherk, 18-years-old, played a solid round early on and was one-under at the turn. She began the back nine with a pair of birdies and pared out to finish the day three-under (69). She now sits at two-under (74-71-69-214).
As for Pollock, 21 and from Whistle Bear Golf Club, she entered the day in a tie for third at one-under. Pollock had a rough start with a double bogey on the second hole, but she got the strokes back with birdies on the fourth and sixth holes and was even at the turn. Pollock birdied the 11th and went on to finish the day one-under (71) to sit at two-under (68-75-71-214) for the championship.
Sole possession of third belongs to St-Germain at one-under (69-70-76-215). The Golf Canada National Development Squad member had a tough third round but managed to finish strong with birdies on the 16th and 18th to end the day at four-over (76).
Thornhill’s Judith Kyrinis is fourth at even par (71-73-72-216) for the tournament. Kyrinis, Thornhill Club, had another solid round finishing the third round at even par (72).
Rounding out the top five is a four-way tie at two-over. In that tie are: Ruthven’s Alyssa Getty (74-73-71-218), St. Thomas’ Mary Ann Hayward (71-74-73-218), Richmond Hill’s Monet Chun (68-75-75-218) and Richmond Hill’s Jessica Ip (71-71-76-218).
In total 64 players began the four-day, 72-hole tournament. In addition to playing for the Marlene Stewart Streit Trophy, the top three finishers will earn for the right to represent Ontario in the team competition at the Canadian Women’s Amateur Championship, July 26-29 at the Ken-Wo Golf Club in New Minas, Nova Scotia.
The final round begins tomorrow at 7:30 a.m. with the final group teeing off at 10:20 a.m. Spectators are invited to Ambassador Golf Club to take in the action. For full tournament information, including the leaderboard and pairings, see the tournament site.
