Women Move On To OCAA Soccer Quarter Finals

By Jay Shewfelt

(AMHERSTBURG, ON) – The St Clair women’s soccer team wrapped up their OCAA regular season schedule Tuesday evening by playing the top ranked Fanshawe Falcons to a 1-1 draw at the Libro Centre in Amherstburg.

In an evenly played first half, the Saints came out on top on a nice goal by Kaitlyn Austin in the 27th minute, after a nice ball forward by Nina Civitarese. It was Austin’s 14th goal in 9 games.

Fanshawe came out hard in the second half and got the equalizer in the 58th minute on a great ball from long distance that hit the bottom of the cross bar and went in. Alexandria Samping was solid in goal, making a couple of key saves late in the game.

St Clair put the pressure on very late, though, and had a couple of glorious chances to win the game in the last 5 minutes, but couldn’t find the back of the net.

With the draw, the Saints record on the season ends up at 7-1-2 and second place in the OCAA West Division. Fanshawe finished in first place with a record of 9 wins and a tie.

St Clair scored 36 goals and allowed 12 in 10 matches this year.

The Saints are next in action on October 27 at 6:00pm at the Libro Centre in Amherstburg in OCAA Quarterfinal action. St Clair is the host college for the 2016 OCAA women’s soccer championship. For more details on the tournament check online.
