Saints Take Softball Silver In Kitchener

By Ted Beale

(KITCHENER, ON) – The St Clair women’s softball team made the final of the OCAA Championship this past weekend in Kitchener, but settled for the Silver Medal after an 11-6 loss to the Durham Lords. The Conestoga Condors played host to the 4-team double-knockout tournament, which was played at Budd Park in Kitchener, and the Saints entered Friday’s games as the top seed.

After a 2-hour rain delay, St Clair hung on for a 5-4 opening round victory over the Humber Hawks Friday afternoon.

The Saints were up 4-0 in their 2nd game against Durham, but eventually fell 8-4 and needed a 7-1 victory over the Fanshawe Falcons on Saturday morning to qualify for the Gold Medal round.

In the championship final the Saints fell behind 7-0 after 4 innings before starting to chip away at the deficit. St Clair scored in their final 3 innings, but Durham continued to stave off the comeback with runs of their own.

Saints starting pitcher Sara Stiller was chased after 3 innings, but relief pitchers Alexa Georgiou and Allison Telfer could not stop the bleeding.

Sarah Bondy had 3 hits in the losing effort for St Clair and Michaela Rilett chipped in with 2 hits and an RBI.

Georgiou and Telfer were both named Championship All-Star Team selections for St Clair.
