By Ted Beale

(WINDSOR, ON) – The St Clair men’s basketball team were a perfect 4-0 in the OCAA’s West Region after a 98-82 win over Redeemer University College Saturday afternoon at the SportsPlex. A torrid pace from the outset saw the Saints explode for 32 first quarter points, but only a 7-point lead entering the second quarter.

St. Clair increased their halftime lead to 52-41 by shooting 62.5% from the field and making 50% of their triples by the break.

Redeemer responded in the third quarter to trail only 69-64 late in the frame, but the Saints staved off the comeback using a large run to gain an 89-68 advantage in the fourth quarter and flirted with the century mark in the late seconds.

Will Lara-Caston led St Clair with 24 points and adding 4 steals. Gil Atencio nearly had a double-double, scoring 21 points with 9 rebounds for the Saints, while chipping in 3 blocked shots. Point guard Charles Baskin also reached double figures for St Clair as he scored 14 points and dished out 3 assists.

The men suffered their first loss the regular season last night, coming up on the short end of an 86-77 decision at Fanshawe in London.

The Saints held a comfortable lead in the early stages, but allowed Fanshawe to trail only 46-41 at halftime. Fanshawe continued to force difficult shots for St Clair in the second half where the game slipped away from the Saints, who shot just 30% from the field and 15% from 3-point land.

To make matters worse, St Clair only shot 37% from the free throw line in the second half and 45% for the game. Fanshawe outscored St Clair 27-15 in the 4th quarter.

Lara-Caston again led St Clair, scoring 20 points to go with 4 rebounds and 6 assists. Fellow backcourt mate Baskin scored 18 points, including 4 triples, and added 5 rebounds and 3 steals.

Anthony Limbombe scored 12 points with Andres Bravo also reaching double figures with 11 points.

Next up for St Clair is Mohawk at home Friday night at 8:00pm and a 3:00pm tip-off against Niagara on Saturday, both at the SportsPlex.
