Shalapata-Header(WINDSOR, ON) – By backstopping the Windsor Spitfires last night to his 6th shutout of the season, a 4-0 win over the Saginaw Spirit, Mike DiPietro also set a club record by registering an 8th career shutout. One of the Canadian Hockey League’s top prospects, DiPietro even helped his cause by assisting on Sean Day’s 3rd period goal.

Fresh from playing in the Top Prospects game in Quebec City, DiPietro set aside all 22 shots fired by the Saginaw shooters. By doing so, the 17 year-old from Amherstburg helped to avenge a 3-2 loss to the same Spirit team on January 28, and hopefully reverse the fortunes of the Spitfires which had, this week, fallen out of the CHL’s Top 10 rankings for the first time in 17 weeks.

Cristiano DiGiacinto was credited with what would become the game-winning goal, from Mikhail Sergachev Gabriel Vilardi, at 7:23 of the 1st period. Just after the half-way point of the period Maddux Rychel set up Tyler Angle for his 1st goal of the season.

The Spitfires extended the lead to 3-0 shortly before the 2nd buzzer when Aaron Luchuk and Tyler Nother assisted on Adam Laishram’s tally at 19:22. And then, to add insult to injury, DiPietro earned the assist on Day’s 13th on the year.

Still chasing the Soo Greyhounds by 2 points, the win expanded the Spitfire’s bulge over 3rd place Sarnia to 15. Windsor will play two straight on the road this weekend starting tonight in Kitchener followed by a tilt in Owen Sound on Saturday.

The spitfires will return home to face the Oshawa Generals on February 9 at 7:00pm.
