(WINDSOR, ON) – During the middle feature of the 3-game Clash at the Colosseum IV, yesterday at Caesars Windsor, the Windsor Lancers staged a dramatic 89-86 win over the visiting Laurier Golden Hawks. The event, which featured two OUA matchups followed by the marquee NBLC tilt between the Windsor Express and Kitchener-Waterloo Titans, was a showcase of exciting basketball competition.
The Lancers held the upper hand in the tightly contested match, moving in front of the Hawks 53-42 by the halfway point. However, a 3rd quarter lapse by Windsor allowed Laurier to chip six points off the deficit and make the game a going concern for fans.
The Hawks took over the lead in the game with just over 6 minutes remaining in the 4th quarter. They built up an 8-point buffer with 2:39 left to play, but the Lancers responded with determined effort.
Buckets by Randy Oriakhi and Micqueel Martin, and a trey from Luke Allin tied the score, but Laurier pressed deep into the Lancers zone. A missed jumper was rebounded by Martin and the ball head-manned to Mike Rocca, who was crossing the centre line.
The senior from Sarnia avoided the coverage and put up a shot toward the Laurier basket. The buzzer sounded just as the ball banked off the back-board and through the hoop. Team mates immediately mobbed Rocca in celebration.
Rocca and Martin led the Lancers with 19 points each. Rocca added 7 helpers while Martin made 3 swipes.
Allin hit for 15 points on the night, in 31 minutes. Mainstay Mitch Farrell contributed 11 in limited time on the court.
Oriakhi came off the bench for the Lancers and dropped 9 points as well as leading the team with 8 boards.
The win extended Windsor’s lead in the OUA West to 1.5 games over the Hawks. The Lancers bettered their record to 9-8 while Laurier slid to 8-10.
This Saturday afternoon, Windsor travels to Waterloo for a showdown with the Warriors (5-12) at 3:00pm. Fans can catch the game live on OUA TV.
