(WINDSOR, ON) – University of Windsor’s Director of Athletics, Mike Havey, and the Windsor Lancer soccer program have announced the appointment of Steve Vagnini as the new head coach of the Lancer men’s soccer team. The appointment is effective immediately.
“It is a pleasure to have Steve rejoin the Lancers in this new role,” said Havey. “Steve is an experienced and accomplished coach and under his leadership the St Clair Saints women’s program has flourished, and we are excited to have him take on this leadership role for the men’s soccer program.”
Widely considered as one of the top coaches in the province, Vagnini has an outstanding record as a winning coach at all levels. He rejoins the Lancers from St Clair College where he spent the past four seasons as the head coach of the Saints women’s soccer program.
Under his leadership, the St Clair women’s soccer program has turned around significantly and become one of the most consistent and top performing programs in Ontario. Over three seasons with the outdoor program Vagnini compiled a regular season record of 20-4-4 and a playoff record of 5-4 including a bronze medal in the fall of 2015.
“St Clair College has been one of my best soccer experiences,” said Vagnini. “The staff, administration, students, and athletes were amazing and I can’t thank everyone enough for giving me the chance to fulfill my potential at such an amazing academic institution.”
During his time at St Clair, Vagnini was named the OCAA’s Women’s Soccer Coach of the Year in 2014, 2015, and 2016 and the CCAA Coach of the Year in 2015.
“We are very sad to be losing Steve Vagnini from our women’s soccer program,” said St Clair’s vice president Ron Seguin. “He has been a huge asset to the athletic department and turned our women’s program into one of the best in Ontario. We wish him all the best in his future endeavours and can’t thank him enough for all of his time, effort and dedication.”
The Sault Ste Marie native also led the St Clair women’s indoor soccer team to a gold medal in 2015, and a silver medal this past March.
A former goaltender with the Windsor Lancers men’s soccer team in the late 1980s, Vagnini served as an assistant coach for the men’s team for 12 seasons from 2000-11, and was also the head goaltending coach from 2007-08.
In addition, he represented the University of Windsor as the head goaltending coach with Team Canada at the 2011 FISU games in China.
“I am very excited to be back home and feel incredibly honoured to put the Blue and Gold on again,” said Vagnini. “My goal is to unify the program and develop an elite team that will make Lancer history.”
He was also the head coach of the Windsor Stars of the Canadian Soccer League for two seasons and has also held coaching positons and administrative positons with the Essex County Soccer Association.
