(ADRIAN, MI) – The St Clair Green Giants bettered their record to 7-2 and extended their division lead to 2.5 games over the Irish Hills Leprechauns with their third straight win last night. The Green Giants dispatched the little green men 5-2 during an overcast night in Adrian, MI.
St Clair got 6 innings from starting pitcher Tyler Whitbread. The junior from Terre Haute, IN, picked up the win after facing 26 batters and giving up 2 earned runs on 5 hits and 5 base on balls with 1 strikeout. The Green Giants then rotated four more pitchers in relief with Kevin Kyle picking up the save after retiring the side in the bottom of the 9th.
The St Clair batters belted out a combined 10 hits off of Irish Hills pitching. Four players had multiple hits including catcher Tyrus Barclay, of Lambton County, who went 2-for-3 with a double, 2 runs scored, and an RBI. Oakville’s Nick Howie also had 2 hits in 4 at bats as well as smacking 2 RBIs and earning a walk.
The Leprechauns put up 2 runs in the bottom of the 2nd, but the lead was short lived as St Clair got them back in the top of the next inning. A 3-run 5th then provided the margin of victory for the Green Giants and the pitching staff shut down any further Irish Hills offense.
St Clair will look to sweep the 2-game series tonight with the first pitch being tossed at 7:05pm.
