(LaSALLE, ON) – Anyone looking for separation after round two of the Ontario Men’s Amateur Championship, July 12 at Ambassador Golf Club, certainly didn’t get it. Multiple players followed up under-par opening rounds with more red numbers and now three names share top spot on the leaderboard: Concord’s John Foster, Unionville’s Max Sear, and Aurora’s Shyamal Nagindas.
Foster was the first of the three to hit the course during round two. He began the day four-under and went on to replicate his round form the first day with another four-under (67). That moved him to eight-under (67-67-134). Foster had a good front nine, making the turn at one-under, but it was his back nine where he did the damage. He carded a bogey-free back nine that included a trio of birdies.
Foster’s lead held up until the afternoon when Sear and Nagindas joined him in front. Sear, from York Downs Golf & Country Club and the defending champion, got off to a rough start with a bogey on the first hole. He made the turn one-under, but like Foster scored well on the back nine, finishing it three-under. Sear carded his second consecutive four-under (67) to move to eight-under (67-67-134).
As for Nagindas, from Meadowbrook Golf & Country Club, he began the day alone in second after an opening round of five-under (66). While he wasn’t able to duplicate his success from day one, he came pretty close with a three-under (68) to join Foster and Sear at eight-under.
The three leaders don’t have much room for error as a pair of players are just one back at seven-under for the championship. Bognor’s Josiah Dixon (70-65-135) and Stouffville’s Gajan Sivabalasingham (68-76-135) will both look to catch the leaders tomorrow.
After the round, the field was cut to the lowest 60 scores, including ties. The cut was set at three-over (145) and 63 players advanced to the final two rounds. The third round goes today with the final round on Friday.
