(DETROIT, MI) – France’s Ligue 1 powerhouse, Paris Saint-Germain, dominated play against AS Roma as the 2017 International Champions Cup kicked off at Comerica Park in Detroit Wednesday night. After the two sides played to a 1-1 draw during regulation, Les Parisiens outlasted Roma during penalty kicks to emerge with the victory.

With Dan Gilbert and Tom Gores pushing for a Detroit MLS franchise, all eyes were on the match attendance. Detroiters didn’t disappoint as the MLB home of the Tigers hosted 36,289 rabid soccer fans decked out in their club colours.

PSG’s all-star defender Marquinhos put Les Rouge-et-Bleus up 1-nil in the 36th minute after hitting the back of the net to Alisson’s right as the keeper went left. Throughout the match PSG captured the attack initiative, winning 14 shots and 5 corner kicks. Roma instead were more methodical while pushing forward, opting to shoot more often from within the box than outside.

La Maggica was rewarded when Umar Sadiq accepted a short cross and found the 5-hole on Alphonse Areola, in the 60th minute. From there both clubs produced chances at wither end, with the slight edge to Paris.

After 2 minutes of stoppage time with neither team taking the advantage, penalty kicks were needed to separate them.

Roma and PSG traded penalties until the 3rd round when Gerson narrowly missed the Paris net. It was all over when Marquinhos successfully deposited PSG’s 5th shot.

The match marked the first appearances for their respective sides of PSG’s Dani Alves and Roma’s Maxime Gonalons.

Time will tell if MLS inserts one of two new franchises into the Detroit market. Based on Wednesday’s ICC match, it will be a difficult argument against doing so.
