Saints Open Season With 4 Wins

(TECUMSEH, ON) – The St Clair men’s baseball team swept a doubleheader against George Brown Saturday afternoon in Tecumseh, at Lacasse Park, by scores of 8-3 and 10-0 to open their OCAA Regular season. The following day, they extended their record to 4-0 after taking two from Seneca.

In game one on Saturday, St Clair jumped ahead 1-0 after the first inning, but fell behind 2-1 entering play in the bottom of the 3rd. The Saints quickly erased the deficit with 4 runs and tacked on 3 more in the 4th.  George Brown could only muster a single run in the 6th inning to complete the scoring.

Saints starting pitcher Kyle Breitner held the mound for a complete game which featured 11 strikeouts while spreading out 7 hits. The Saints terrorized the base paths with 9 stolen bases in the game, led by rookie outfielder Carson Burke, of Tecumseh, who swiped 5 of his own.

In game two the Saints opened the scoring in the 1st inning, taking a 1-0 lead, before exploding for 7 runs in the 4th to put the game out of reach. St Clair completed the mercy-shortened affair with a sac-fly by pinch hitter Jordan Pine.

Saints starting pitcher Taylor Pappin notched his first win by surrendering just 4 hits and a walk while striking out 6 George Brown batters. Michael McKay and Austin Oulds paced the St Clair offense with two hits apiece which included doubles for each of them.

Riley Warren also had two hits and a pair of RBI’s for St Clair.

St Clair completed their home stand on Sunday by taking a doubleheader from Seneca. In Sunday’s game one, the Saints fell behind 1-0 in the 4th inning, but pushed 3 runs across in the 5th to assume the lead. It was all the offense they would need to stake starting pitcher Seth Chauvin, of Tecumseh, who went the distance, allowing just 3 hits and striking out 3.

Oulds had two RBI’s and a single to lead St Clair at the plate and added a stolen base.

In game two, St Clair scored two in the 2nd inning, but saved their energy for an 8-run outburst in the 5th, securing another mercy-shortened 10-0 victory. Saints starter Micah Harris, from Cottam, picked up the win in short work, only giving up a single hit to go with 2 strikeouts.

Burke was short of the cycle by a homerun when he collected 3 hits and added an RBI while Kevin Dion had a pair of hits to go with an RBI for St Clair.

St Clair goes on the road next weekend for doubleheaders at Humber in Etobicoke on Saturday and Durham in Oshawa on Sunday.
