(LaSALLE, ON) – LaSalle Vipers forward Manny Silverio has burst out of the gate during the first month of regular season play and is turning heads. The 20 year-old was recently selected by the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League as the Western Conference Offensive Player of the Month for September. He was also chosen by the LaSalle Vipers as player of the month for September.
Silverio will be awarded a plaque by Doug Johnston, convener for the Western Conference of the GOJHL, at the Vipers October 25 home game against the Komoka Kings. He has also received an embroidered sports jacket and a $50 gift certificate provided by team sponsor Joe Schmoe’s Eats N Drinks.
The GOJHL selects an offensive and defensive player as well as a goaltender each month. Silverio played seven games and scored four goals and had 12 assists in September.
“We take into consideration whether the goals are even-strength, short-handed, or power play goals, but certainly any player who is averaging over two points a game is playing with a high level of skill and competency and a big part of his team’s success,” Johnston said.
Silverio, who last season had 26 goals and 34 assists, has had a strong start to the 2017-2018 season with five goals and 16 assists to date. He is the league’s seventh leading scorer this year and is also one of the Vipers assistant captains.
The 175-pound Windsor native was also selected to participate in the 2015-16 and 2014-15 GOJHL Top Prospects Games and, also in 2014-15, named to the Western Conference All-Rookie Team.
“Manny is a great leader for our team and provided us with great offensive play for the month of September,” said Vipers coach and general manager John Nelson. “His competitive level is off the charts and provides a great example and measuring stick for our team. Congrats Manny!”
