(OSHAWA, ON) – The St Clair men’s baseball team claimed their 2nd National Championship with a 3-2 victory over Fanshawe on Sunday afternoon at Oshawa’s Kinsmen Memorial Stadium. The win avenges last year’s 2-1 loss to the Falcons and puts a stamp on quite a season for the Saints, who also won the OCAA regular season title and the Provincial Championships.
The Road To Gold
- St Clair 10 : 1 Fanshawe
- St Clair 8 : 3 Humber
- St Clair 0 : 3 Durham
- St Clair 8 : 0 Ahuntsic (QC)
- St Clair 4 : 1 Holland (PE)
St Clair fell behind 1-0 in the top of the 1st inning, but responded quickly in the bottom half to take back a 3-1 lead. The teams played scoreless until the 7th inning when Fanshawe crossed a run and threatened to tie the game with runners aboard.
But, Player of the Game and St Clair starting pitcher, Taylor Pappin put a cap on his game to secure the complete game win. Pappin wasn’t 100 per cent after being ill the last few days, but he gave up only 2 earned runs on 5 hits but struck out 7 Fanshawe batters in the gutty performance.
Saints 3rd baseman Matt Bondy had a triple and a single with 2 RBIs on his way to winning the Championship’s Most Valuable Player award. Also contributing at the plate for St Clair was Michael McKay, who had a double and two walks to go with an RBI.
Pappin was given the Championship’s Top Pitcher award in addition to being named to the All-Star Team as the Top Left Handed Pitcher. Other Saints joining Pappin on the All-Star team were Bondy, Carson Burke in the outfield, and Kyle Breitner as Top Right Handed Pitcher.
