(WINDSOR, ON) – From start to finish the Windsor Lancers kicked off the OUA men’s basketball season with a 90-80 win over the Guelph Gryphons at St Denis Centre Saturday night.
Windsor built to a 6-point lead with 3 minutes left in the 1st quarter but Guelph whittled it away until Marcus Jones dropped a jumper and Lukas Wood connected on a trey to stake the Lancers to a 26-22 lead. The Gryphons wouldn’t go away, again chipping away the lead to as little as a single point, but Windsor Mike Rocca knocked down 11 of his 13 2nd quarter points to send the Lancers to the dressing room with a 51-41 lead.
A 7-point run by Guelph to open the 3rd period was met with a 4-point reply by Windsor. The teams traded jumpers before the Lancers took over on a 10-2 push to establish an 11-point margin at the end of 36 minutes. Guelph outscored Windsor 24-23 in the final frame, but it was not enough and the Lancers had one in the book.
Rocca completed the evening with a game-high 33 points and registered a double-double with 11 boards. Randy Oriakhi also scored a double-double by dropping 12 points and matched Rocca in rebounds. Lucas Orlita contributed 11 points to the Lancers win.
Windsor welcomes Ryerson and Toronto this weekend starting Friday night at 8pm. The Saturday match with the Varsity Blues is a matinee effort at 4pm.
