The St Clair men’s basketball team earned their first win of the OCAA West Region season with a 97-72 decision over Sault College Saturday night at the SportsPlex. A fairly even contest in the first half saw the Saints with a 45-37 lead at the break, but St. Clair used a small run to create a 69-53 margin after three quarters.
The Saints expanded their lead in the 4th to a commanding 87-57 advantage and were able to coast to the final score.
Both teams shot the ball well from the field in the game with 2nd half shooting eclipsing 60% on both sides. But, turnovers were the visitors undoing as Sault gave up 30 points on 32 giveaways.
St Clair also scored a monstrous 59 points off the bench.
Lance Drummonds had a huge night, scoring 31 of those bench points for the Saints. He added 9 rebounds and 3 steals to go with a blocked shot.
Will Lara-Caston and Juwan Lynch each scored 12 points apiece with Glynn Willis-Paris chipping in 10 points for St Clair. Lara-Caston distributed well with 7 assists and added 5 thefts.
On Sunday, the men made it two wins in a row after dropping Sault 107-71 in the rematch.
Sault came out firing in the 1st quarter and led the Saints 23-21 entering the second frame, but St Clair furnished with a strong 10 minutes and took the 54-32 lead into the halftime break.
The Saints kept the pressure on the remainder of the game, increasing their lead down the stretch. Another 32 Sault turnovers resulted in 35 Saints points after the home team shot 58% from the field, including 9 makes from beyond the arc.
Jermaine Lynch led St Clair with 20 points and Drummonds and Nik Veigli both put up 18 points.
Lara-Caston scored 17 points to go with an impressive 9 assists for the Saints. Gil Atencio rounded out St Clair’s double digit scorers by putting up 14 points and adding 8 boards.
The Saints are now 2-3 on the year and reside in 8th place in the OCAA West Division. They will tip-off at 3pm on both Saturday and Sunday as they host Conestoga and Sheridan, respectively.
