(WINDSOR, ON) – A decidedly middling season for the Windsor Lancers has turned interesting after 3-straight wins this week have brought them to a game below .500. The victories have also vaulted them into a half-game lead over 4th place Laurier and to with 2 games of 2nd place Western, in the OUA Western Division.
The Lancers eked out three wins with no more than a 9-point aggregate margin. They began their run with a 97-95 defeat of the 5th place Waterloo Warriors. Windsor put on a clinic after trailing by 7 after the opening 10 minutes and then overcoming a 14-point deficit in the 3rd to emerge victorious. Waterloo dropped 2 points with 49 seconds remaining, but two missed jumpers and rebounding by Marcus Jones down the stretch sealed it.
Jones and Chris Poloniato each put up 21 points for the Lancers while Anthony Zrvnar contributed 16 as well as 10 boards. Captain Mike Rocca fed his team mates for 12 assists as well as pulling down 5 offensive rebounds. Windsor outscored Waterloo in 2nd chance points (13-8) and points off of turnovers (20-11).
Windsor managed a 96-92 win over the Gryphons on Saturday in Guelph. The Lancers won it in the 1st half on the back of a 31 point outburst in the opening frame. Both teams settled down in the 2nd quarter before scoring identical tallies in the 2nd half.
Rocca and Lucas Orlita each dropped 20 and Jones added 18 to help pace the offence. Zrvnar (14) and Damian Persaud (10) also scored in the double digits.
Last night the Lancers made it three straight after disposing of the McMaster Marauders at home 81-78. Windsor ran to a 40-37 1st half lead and then kept the Hamiltonians at arms length over the final 20 minutes.
Jones had a game-high 18 points while Rocca was behind at 16. Head coach Chris Oliver also received double digit scoring from Orlita (13), Zrvnar (12), and Persaud (11).
The Lancers did what every good team must do and put away teams below them in the standings. They now have to set their sights a little higher as they prepare for the OUA West Division leading Brock Badgers (12-2) on the road Saturday.
They’ll return home for a pair of games against the Lakehead Thunderwolves beginning at 8pm on January 26. They return to the hardwood for a rematch the next night also at 8pm.
