(WINDSOR, ON) – The St Clair men’s basketball team (5-9) came close, but could not put enough plays together to upset West Region leading Redeemer Royals Saturday night at the SportsPlex. The Saints fell by a score of 85-76.
Redeemer (12-1) is the 2nd ranked team in the OCAA and the 8th ranked team in the nation. They set the tone early by leading 29-19 after the 1st quarter. The Saints responded in the 2nd quarter with an 11-point run and were within striking distance at halftime, down only 45-37.
Redeemer made five triples in the third quarter to create a nice cushion and led 64-53 heading to the final period. St Clair made it interesting in the 4th quarter, overcoming a 15-point deficit and twice were within 5 points in the late stages. But Redeemer held on for the win with deft shooting from the foul line in a game where they converted 83% from the stripe.
Outside shooting also hampered St Clair, who only made 17 per cent from deep and could not break 40 per cent overall from the field.
Gil Atencio was a force for St Clair, leading all scorers with 24 points. Fellow Panamanian Andrés Bravo had a nice game also, scoring 12 points and adding 5 rebounds for the Saints.
Lance Drummonds just missed a double-double with 10 points to go with 9 rebounds and 5 assists.
The Saints will tipoff against the Conestoga Condors at the SportsPlex this Saturday at 7pm.
