(WINDSOR, ON) – Over the past two weeks local WECSSAA (May 17-19) and SWOSSAA (May 23-24) track and field athletes put their hard work to test against other local and regional athletes at the University of Windsor’s Alumni Field. The overall individual and school team 2018 winners in each grade category were determined.

“The competition continues next weekend at the OFSAA West Regionals, to be held June 1 and 2, at Sandwich Secondary,” said retired high school teacher, and now track official, Bob Mailloux. “Then, the  OFSSA finals will be held June 7 to 9 at York University.”

The culmination of the WECSSAA and SWOSSAA meets featured the senior women’s and men’s 4x400m relay competition. The winner of the men’s title at both meets were the Herman Green Griffins, who also own both meet records, from when Canadian Olympian Brandon McBride anchored the team.

Running the anchor this year was his younger brother, Essex grade 12 student William McBride.

“Not only does my brother inspire me athletically, he inspires me academically,” said the junior McBride.

Although the current squad was a couple seconds off the record, with stiffer competition expected at the OFSAA West Regionals and OFSAA finals, taking place the next two weekends, anything is possible.
